about

‘Boy in a Blue Dress’ is Between Mirrors’ lead single from their forthcoming EP Blue Dreams, out this year via Off The List Records. All the songs on the EP were written and recorded by the duo over the last three years, with much of the process happening virtually during lockdowns. As the pair grew more confident and familiar with the songs and expanded their (mostly self-taught) mixing skills, they began to experiment with more ambitious instrumentation and recording effects.

‘Boy in a Blue Dress’ began a simple piano ballad featuring Emily Gray’s lead vocals, but grew to encompass a full arrangement for string quartet (recorded with each band member playing multiple parts), a violin solo that rises to the surface at an important emotional moment, and Irene Zhong’s ghostly backing vocals. These parts were rehearsed and recorded at various locations, including at Bakehouse Studios with engineer Errol Green, as well as at Irene’s homemade studio. The expanded instrumentation allowed the pair to delve more deeply into the melancholy, romantic longing of the song.

‘I wanted to write a late-night love song - the kind that sounds like the end of a night when you’ve drunk a little too much, and the walls between reality and dreams are starting to blur. And I wanted it to be unapologetically queer, with the object of affection being a figure whose defining quality is that they don’t fit into the narrator’s ideas of gender. As soon as I wrote the title, the music and lyrics came together very quickly - like a blossoming of colour and sensation and mood.’ - Emily Gray, Between Mirrors
